On behalf of the Executive Board of Teamsters Local Union 229 I am  proud to announce the continued success of our Scholarship Fund which helps the children of our members who are attending accredited trade schools and college.

 

This Scholarship Fund is supported solely from the money raised at our Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament.  This year was our 16th Annual Tournament and once again proved to be a tremendous success.

 

Over the past fifteen years eighty-six scholarships have been awarded totaling $46,000.00.  This year’s awards will provide for $500.00 scholarships for three first year students and three continuing education scholarships.

The Sixteenth Annual Teamsters Local 229 Scholarship Golf Tournament was held on Monday, July 9. 2007 at Sand Springs Country Club, Drums, PA.  Once again  we would like to thank everyone who made the event a great success.

 

 

 

Applications for the 2008—2009 James R. Hoffa Scholarship Fund are now available at the Local Union Office.

 

The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund’s 2008-2009 scholarship for high school seniors is now underway.  This scholarship is for high school seniors graduating in 2008.  The applicant must be the child or grandchild of a Teamster member with at least 12 months good standing.  The member can not have been a full-time elected officer within the 12 months preceding the scholarship application deadline of March 30, 2008.  The student must plan to attend a four-year accredited institution in the fall of 2008.

The Teamsters Local Union 229 Scholarship Fund started in 1992.  We are proud to report that we have enjoyed 16 very successful years.  Over the past 16 years, ninety-two scholarships have been awarded, totaling $52,000.00.

Plans are already underway for our 17th year which will award scholarships for the 2008/2009 academic year.  Scholarship applications are available by visiting the Local Union office or by calling 1-800-448-2290.  The following information is intended to provide a brief overview of our Scholarship Program:

The Teamsters Local 229 Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program initiated and administered by Teamsters Local Union No. 229, 3104 N. Main Ave. Scranton, Pennsylvania 18508.  The purpose of the Scholarship Fund is to provide academic scholarships to qualified sons and daughters of Teamsters Local 229 members based on scholastic achievement,  community service, extracurricular activities and need.

Type of Scholarship:

Three Scholarships in the amount of $500.00 for first year students.
Two Scholarships in the amount of $500.00 for continuing education.
One Scholarship in the amount of $500.00 for trade school.
If no applications are received for a trade school a third continuing education Scholarship will be awarded.

Criteria for Selection of Students:

Academic achievement including, but not limited to, strong scholastic performance while in high school, however, a significant academic improvement during high school will also be considered. Although class rank is an important factor, selection shall not be based solely on a student’s class rank.  Various other factors will be considered in evaluating a student’s scholastic performance.
Community service which includes a student’s involvement in activities which are not sponsored by his or her particular school.
Extracurricular activities including, but not limited to, a student’s involvement in student government, sports and other school sponsored events.
A Student’s race, creed, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation or national origin shall not be considered in the selection process.

Students Eligible to Apply:

Teamsters Local 229 Scholarship Fund applicants must be the Children and or Legal dependents of an active member of Teamsters Local 229.  Further, applicants must have a pending application, be accepted or plan on continuing their education at an accredited post-secondary educational institution , such as a four-year or two-year public/private  college or university, a two-year technical college, or other accredited educational institution.

Application Deadline:

All applications must be received by the Local Union no later that July 31 of the academic year for which the student is applying for the scholarship.

Source of Funding:  

Funding for the Teamsters Local 229 Scholarship Fund is dependent on the Annual Golf Tournament.
